Freetown – The Parliament of Sierra Leone has officially commissioned a newly refurbished access ramp and pedestrian walkway designed to improve accessibility for persons with disabilities. The reconstruction project, executed by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), was unveiled on Tuesday, receiving widespread appreciation from parliamentary leadership.
The renovated ramp and connecting walkway bridge link the Parliament’s Administrative Building to the historic Old Building, as well as other precincts within the parliamentary complex. Prior to the renovation, the access point had been described as a “deathtrap” due to its deteriorated state, posing serious safety risks to individuals with disabilities, staff, and visitors alike.
During the commissioning ceremony, Deputy Clerk of Parliament Mr. Gilbert Bosco N’habay expressed heartfelt gratitude to UNOPS on behalf of the parliamentary leadership and staff. He acknowledged the timely completion of the project, underscoring its significance in promoting safety and accessibility within the legislative grounds.
The refurbishment of the ramp is part of broader efforts by development partners to strengthen institutional infrastructure and enhance accessibility in Sierra Leone, particularly within key governance institutions like Parliament. This renovation not only improves mobility but also symbolizes a growing recognition of the necessity for disability-friendly public spaces in the country.
