The Sierra Leone Police, in collaboration with the 12th Infantry Battalion of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, conducted successful raids on illicit gold mining operations in the Diang Chiefdom of Koinadugu District, specifically targeting the renowned tourist destination, Lake Sonfon, which is celebrated as one of Africa’s most beautiful lakes.
During the operation, led by Local Unit Commander Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Ibrahim Barrie, illicit miners abandoned their activities and fled into the nearby dense forests. The enforcement team managed to confiscate two mining excavators and dismantled four batteries used in the illicit operations.
An investigation is underway to ascertain the ownership of the confiscated excavators, with the Integrated Intelligence Services (IIS) actively involved in the process.
CSP Ibrahim Barrie has reaffirmed the police’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy regarding illicit mining activities, emphasizing the importance of protecting Lake Sonfon as a valuable asset for the government of Sierra Leone.
