Portee Residents Demand Urgent Action on Waste Crisis Near FCC

By Kadijatu Bangura, Reporter, D.S

Portee, a vibrant community in Freetown, has recently raised alarms over the growing waste accumulation near the parking area of the Freetown City Council (FCC) building. Residents and traders are calling on Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr to take immediate action to address the situation and restore cleanliness in the area.

The community reports that the space just outside the FCC offices at Portee Market has become heavily littered, impeding movement and detracting from the area’s overall hygiene. Many locals have referred to the waste-filled area as a “doty box,” a term commonly used for places where garbage builds up, causing discomfort for residents and workers nearby.

These concerns come as Mayor Aki-Sawyerr prepares to fully implement the Solid and Liquid Waste Collection Byelaws 2024, which aim to enhance waste management by dividing Freetown into eight waste management blocks and smaller zones.

Through the #DortiMusGo campaign, the mayor is encouraging residents to contribute to the city’s cleanliness by following waste management rules and reporting improperly managed waste sites. Community members are also urged to register with approved waste service providers to facilitate better waste disposal.

The Portee community continues to call for urgent action from Mayor Aki-Sawyerr to resolve the waste issue near the FCC building and create a cleaner environment for all.
