Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio is championing a groundbreaking initiative to establish an International Treaty ensuring access to justice for survivors of sexual violence worldwide. Speaking at the UN Security Council, President Bio emphasized the need for multilateral cooperation to protect the rights of 1.3 billion survivors globally.

This push follows the 2022 UN General Assembly’s unanimous adoption of a Resolution on Access to Justice for Survivors of Sexual Violence, a landmark initiative led by President Bio. In an exclusive interview with RISE, President Bio outlined his vision to unite nations, international organizations, and other stakeholders in creating a binding treaty. He emphasized the urgency of global commitment to ending sexual violence and securing justice for victims.

President Bio’s leadership on this issue is crucial in addressing the scourge of sexual violence, which affects millions worldwide. The proposed treaty aims to provide a robust framework for nations to ensure survivors receive the justice they deserve.

By advocating for a global treaty, President Bio is sending a powerful message: survivors of sexual violence deserve justice, and the international community must unite to ensure it. His efforts have the potential to create a lasting impact, providing hope and support to survivors worldwide.
