President Julius Maada Bio has inaugurated a new 10-million-ton iron ore processing plant developed by Leone Rock Metal Group, also known as Kingho Mining Company, in Tonkolili. The launch marks a significant milestone for the company, which has been operating in the region since 2021.
This new facility is part of Leone Rock’s ambitious $1 billion investment in Sierra Leone, which has included various infrastructure developments aimed at increasing processing capacity to 32 million tons. Since commencing production, Leone Rock’s contributions to the Tonkolili district have had a substantial impact on the national economy and the lives of Sierra Leonean citizens.
The company has directly employed over 8,000 individuals, with approximately 90% of these positions filled by local workers across diverse fields. Additionally, Leone Rock has established a robust energy infrastructure at its sites, totaling 150 MW, which includes 43 MW generated from solar power.
With the inauguration of the new processing plant, President Bio expects an increase in Sierra Leone’s revenue from mineral exports. Leone Rock has also made significant contributions to the national treasury, paying over US$10 million in taxes to the government in the past year. The company’s adherence to progressive mining laws has benefitted the Tonkolili communities, yielding over US$6 million through a community development fund. These funds have been allocated to vital projects, including piped water systems, school construction, and enhancements to agricultural practices.
Infrastructure development has been another focal point of Leone Rock’s investment, with upgrades to the port at Pepel achieving a 30 million metric ton annual export loading capacity. The company has also invested in a 200km railway line that connects the mining site to the port.
In addition to infrastructure and economic contributions, Leone Rock has engaged in numerous corporate social responsibility initiatives, notably its involvement in the Sierra Leone Premier League.
During the launch, President Bio highlighted the importance of this private sector investment, stating that it exemplifies how good governance can drive progress. He also announced plans to explore a model for constructing the road from Masiaka to Mabontor to Bumbuna to Bendugu.
A cheque for NLe 62,214,818 was presented as this year’s community development fund during the event. President Bio reiterated his government’s commitment to transparency in the mining sector, emphasizing the need for affected communities to benefit from mining activities.
“It is essential that the communities affected by mining activities see the benefits and support they deserve. Together, we are working to ensure a more equitable future for all,” he stated.
