President Bio Unveils €23 Million Data Recovery Center in Bo

On Saturday, November 29, 2025, President Dr. Julius Maada Bio inaugurated a new €23 million Data Recovery Center in Bo City, developed by Orange Sierra Leone in collaboration with Sonatel Group. This state-of-the-art facility marks a significant advancement in Sierra Leone’s digital transformation agenda.

During the launch, President Bio expressed enthusiasm, stating, “This milestone reflects a crucial step in our digital transformation journey, and I look forward to more investments that will enhance our digital infrastructure.” The facility serves as a full-scale replica of the existing data center in Freetown and is designed to safeguard national data, improve service reliability, and ensure business continuity during emergencies.

Sylvanus Redwood-Sawyer, Chief Technical Officer of Orange Sierra Leone, referred to the new center as the company’s disaster recovery hub, the second of its kind in the country. It is expected to significantly enhance digital connectivity and resilience, supporting the growth of Sierra Leone’s digital and financial services sector.

In his address, President Bio commended Orange Sierra Leone for its commitment to investing in Bo, aligning with his administration’s vision of enhancing technology and innovation. He noted the critical need for increased technical innovation and robust cybersecurity measures. “As we expand our digital space, service providers must ensure strong protections for citizens’ data,” he remarked.

Minister of Communication, Technology, and Innovation, Salima Monorma Bah, highlighted the government’s achievements in fostering a digital landscape since 2018, emphasizing significant investments made to expand connectivity nationwide.

Sekou Amadou Bah, CEO of Orange Sierra Leone, described the Bo Data Center as a strategic asset for bolstering the country’s digital and financial sectors. He stressed its role in promoting economic growth and facilitating digital innovation.

Brelotte BA, CEO of Sonatel Group, emphasized the center’s importance for data sovereignty and resilience against disruptions, advocating for inclusive digital transformation.

Hon. Matthew Nyumah, Leader of Government Business in Parliament, commended the investment, explaining that the new facility ensures continuity in case of any disruptions at the Freetown data center, thereby strengthening Sierra Leone’s overall digital infrastructure.

The establishment of the Orange Sierra Leone Data Center in Bo represents a major step toward positioning Sierra Leone as a modern digital hub in West Africa. President Bio’s leadership in promoting private investment and digital transformation highlights the government’s commitment to empowering citizens and fostering growth in the digital age.
