On September 18, 2025, President Julius Maada Bio officially inaugurated the Sewa Grounds Market, a modern facility strategically located in the heart of Freetown’s Central Business District. This initiative aims to alleviate street trading issues while providing a secure environment for local vendors.
Developed by the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NaSSIT) using contributions from workers’ pensions, the market features 1,544 trading spaces, including 76 large and medium lockup shops, 277 small shops, and 170 district shops. Additional amenities include a parking area, a daycare center, police and fire posts, boreholes, water towers, 176 toilets, and round-the-clock security with CCTV surveillance.
During the inauguration, President Bio commended NaSSIT for its commitment to human-capital-driven development and encouraged the Trust to implement similar projects across the country. He recognized the resilience of small traders, particularly women, and announced plans for a pension scheme aimed at informal workers, including traders, motorcycle riders, and drivers.
“This market represents more than just a safe and dignified space for our traders,” stated President Bio. “It is designed to enhance small businesses, improve livelihoods, and invigorate Freetown’s economy.” He also revealed a temporary reduction in stall rent from NLe 12,000 to NLe 6,000, a move that has been positively received by traders.
NaSSIT Director General Mohamed Fuaad Daboh expressed gratitude to those who contributed to the project and pledged to uphold high maintenance standards for the market. Employment and Labour Minister Mohamed Rahman Swaray characterized the commissioning as “long overdue,” reflecting President Bio’s responsiveness to public needs.
With its modern facilities and emphasis on safety, the Sewa Grounds Market is anticipated to significantly reduce street trading in central Freetown and provide a sustainable boost to the city’s commercial activities.
