In a dramatic turn of events, George Browne, one of the prisoners who escaped during the failed coup on November 26, is now facing legal proceedings following allegations of assault. Browne has been accused of stabbing Mohamed Alie Bah in the lower end of his left eye on March 14, 2025, at Kroo Town Road in Freetown.
Browne, who was previously incarcerated at Pademba Road Prison for wounding his uncle, was arraigned before Magistrate Santigie Bangura at Pademba Road Court No. 2 on two charges: wounding and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, contrary to Sierra Leonean law.
The charge sheet reveals that Browne allegedly maliciously wounded Bah and assaulted him, causing actual bodily harm.
During the court proceedings, the complainant, Mohamed Alie Bah, a businessman, testified that he knew the accused through his brother, Ibrahim Bah. He recounted the events leading up to the incident on March 14, detailing that his brother had entrusted Browne with 7,000 New Leones to deliver to someone. However, when Browne failed to return, the Bah brothers began searching for him.
Bah stated that they located Browne on Adelaide Street, where they confronted him and discovered he possessed several new mobile phones valued at 3,000 New Leones, along with a new watch and clothing. The property was reportedly handed over to Bah after Browne was apprehended and taken to the Adelaide Street Police Station.
The following day, Browne allegedly returned to Bah’s house demanding the property back. When Bah insisted he should go to the police, Browne threatened to kill him. While conversing with another individual named Abdulai, Bah testified that Browne stabbed him in the eye with a knife, resulting in significant injury. After the attack, Browne fled the scene but was later apprehended by the police.
Bah was issued a medical report for treatment at Connaught Hospital and subsequently provided this documentation to the police.
Standing unrepresented in court, Browne cross-examined Bah during the proceedings. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to return to court on April 15, 2025.
