In a bid to combat environmental degradation and promote sustainable livelihoods, a critical tree planting initiative has been launched in the Outamba Kilimi National Park, northwest Sierra Leone. The project, implemented by Tacugama with support from EUCORD, aims to restore the park’s lush landscapes and revitalize its ecological balance.
On July 20, 2024, community members from 11 villages joined forces to plant over 6,000 trees of various species, including economic trees like Tamerined, Cashewnut, and Mango. This effort not only combats deforestation but also provides livelihood support and fosters ecotourism.
Section Chief Pa Alimamy Momoh Kamara praised the initiative, saying it regenerates degraded areas and conserves the natural environment. Youth leader Mr. Mohamed Turay thanked Tacugama/EUCORD for providing monthly stipends and hopes for the people of Tambaka.
The project has created employment for youths and women, promoting women’s empowerment through Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA). Stakeholders, including males and females, support the tree planting activities and protection of the sites.
The initiative’s impact extends beyond environmental conservation, promoting sustainable livelihoods and reducing human-wildlife conflict. As Chairlady from Tompary aptly puts it, “Without a forest, there will be no rain; without rain, there will be no farming activities.”
