London, November 4, 2025 – Continuing its community outreach efforts, H.E. Dr. Morie Komba Manyeh and the team from the Sierra Leone High Commission (SLHC) visited Cllr Eddie Hanson, the Mayor of Camden, at the Camden Civic Building in central London today.
This visit served as a platform for renewed dialogue and strengthened relations between the Sierra Leonean diplomatic mission and the leader of one of the UK’s most diverse boroughs. Mayor Hanson, who has roots in Sierra Leone, guided the SLHC delegation through the civic building, showcasing key areas such as the main council chamber and halls designated for civic functions like the registration of births and marriages. Throughout the tour, he elaborated on the daily operations of local governance in Camden.
Cllr Hanson, who transitioned from a Sierra Leonean refugee to being Camden’s first Mayor of Black African descent, shared poignant reflections on his journey of determination and public service. He expressed a heartfelt sentiment, saying, “My father, my greatest source of inspiration, did not live to see me ascend to this important seat. Everything I do is in honour of his belief in me.”
In his address, H.E. Dr. Morie Manyeh commended the Mayor’s extraordinary journey and his unwavering commitment to public service, describing him as “a living testament to Sierra Leone’s enduring spirit of resilience and excellence.” He added, “Cllr Hanson’s story embodies the power of perseverance and the strength of our shared values as honest and hardworking Sierra Leoneans, wherever we find ourselves.”
Deputy High Commissioner Mrs. Yvonne King Odigboh praised the Mayor’s dedication to community empowerment, highlighting that “his story will continue to inspire generations to believe that humble beginnings can lead to significant impact when guided by purpose and integrity.”
This visit emphasized the High Commission’s ongoing commitment to strengthening connections within the Sierra Leonean diaspora and fostering partnerships that promote unity, service, and progress across communities in the United Kingdom.
