Sierra Leone (S/L) has officially launched an innovative direct shipping route connecting Taizhou Port in China to the Queen Elizabeth II Quay in Freetown, significantly enhancing trade by reducing transit times from 12 weeks to just five. The new corridor, aimed at optimizing the flow of goods between the two countries, was inaugurated at a ceremony featuring notable figures such as Madam Judith B. Kosseh, Deputy Director General of the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA), and H.E. Abu Bakarr Karim, Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to China. Executives from the Chinese logistics firm Xiehai Group, the service’s operator, also attended.
Madam Kosseh characterized the new shipping line as a “transformative leap” for Sierra Leone’s trade landscape. She highlighted its potential to expedite the delivery of essential goods, raw materials, and capital equipment, thereby assisting businesses in reducing costs and enhancing supply chain efficiency. “This is a clear signal of our readiness to serve as a logistics hub for West Africa,” she stated.
Ambassador Karim underscored the significance of this development, framing it as a testament to the robust diplomatic relationships and strategic collaborations between China and Sierra Leone. He expressed optimism that this initiative would better integrate Sierra Leone into global trade networks.
“This project exemplifies how sustained bilateral cooperation can yield tangible economic benefits,” Karim remarked. “It will strengthen our commitment to leveraging maritime connectivity as a driver of sustainable development.”
Xiehai Group, a leading enterprise in ship transportation and logistics, will operate the new service. Representatives from the company noted that the direct shipping line would provide Sierra Leonean importers with faster and more reliable delivery schedules, giving manufacturers, traders, and entrepreneurs who rely on Chinese goods a competitive edge.
The initiative is expected to bolster the competitiveness of Sierra Leonean businesses in both regional and international markets by ensuring quicker delivery times. The leadership of the SLPHA reaffirmed their commitment to modernizing port operations and fostering international partnerships. “By enhancing our port infrastructure and cultivating global collaborations, we are positioning Sierra Leone as a paragon of maritime efficiency in the region,” Madam Kosseh declared.
This new shipping route is anticipated to be a game-changer for Sierra Leone’s business community, aligning with the country’s Medium-Term National Development Plan, which focuses on improving the business environment and establishing Sierra Leone as a leader in trade and logistics.
