By Joseph Momoh, D.S. Reporter

In a significant development for education in Sierra Leone, the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) has announced that schools will officially reopen on Monday, September 8, 2025. This decision follows successful negotiations with the Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU) aimed at addressing critical concerns within the education sector.

On September 4, 2025, Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh convened a high-level meeting with key stakeholders, including MBSSE officials, SLTU representatives, the Teaching Service Commission (TSC), and the Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (CPASS). The meeting primarily focused on addressing the SLTU’s concerns regarding outstanding subsidy payments.

As a result of these constructive discussions, the government has committed to disbursing overdue subsidies for both the second and third terms. Additionally, specialized committees have been established to tackle remaining issues raised by the Union, fostering a collaborative approach to resolving educational challenges.

This agreement marks a pivotal moment in ensuring the continuity of education for students across Sierra Leone. The government has reiterated its dedication to supporting teachers and enhancing the overall educational landscape, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing both teacher welfare and student success.

The MBSSE extends its gratitude to the SLTU, CPASS, TSC, and all educational stakeholders for their unwavering dedication and cooperative efforts in securing a brighter future for the nation’s children.
