A senior military officer from the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) has been taken into custody following allegations of raping a junior female officer. The incident reportedly occurred on April 22, 2025, at Villa Four, Wilberforce, in Freetown.

Sources indicate that the Colonel instructed the female officer to prepare food at his residence for expected guests. He allegedly threatened her with violence and subsequently sexually assaulted her. The Campaign for Human Rights and Development International (CHRDI) confirmed the officer’s detention at the Wilberforce officers’ mess in a statement, noting that the alleged assault took place between 8 and 9 p.m. on April 22, with the detention occurring the following day.

CHRDI emphasized the need for military authorities to address such issues with seriousness and transparency, referencing previous concerns about sexual harassment and domestic violence within the RSLAF. The organization called for a thorough investigation to ensure justice and uphold the integrity of the armed forces.

Abdul M. Fatoma, Executive Director of CHRDI, expressed concern over the military’s failure to provide a safe environment for women in its ranks, highlighting ongoing issues of sexual harassment and violence. He described the current situation involving the detained Colonel as “distressing” and called for urgent reforms to protect the dignity and safety of female personnel.

The RSLAF has confirmed that it is investigating the serious allegations following a complaint filed earlier this month. An official statement released by the military on Monday stated that the Military Police Regiment (MPR) was alerted to the incident on April 22, describing the allegations as “grave.”

“In response to this serious matter, RSLAF has promptly launched a thorough investigation to uncover the facts surrounding the incident,” the statement read. The military emphasized its commitment to transparency and accountability, assuring the public that it will keep them informed about the investigation’s progress and outcomes.

As the investigation unfolds, the RSLAF underscores its dedication to upholding human rights and justice, affirming its duty to protect all personnel serving in the institution.
