Nine individuals, including seven Chinese and two Sierra Leoneans with military backgrounds, are scheduled to appear in a Harare court on Tuesday following the discovery of a gold smuggling operation and a related conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

Law enforcement sources in Zimbabwe report that the situation escalated when one group of Chinese nationals was intercepted near Nyabira while in possession of 5 kilograms of gold, reportedly intended for smuggling into Zambia. Subsequent investigations uncovered a plan involving a second group of Chinese and the two Sierra Leoneans, who were arrested in Karoi while allegedly plotting to rob the first group of their gold.

During the operation, one of the Sierra Leoneans involved in the attempted robbery sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, and firearms were recovered from the scene. The involvement of Sierra Leonean nationals in this international incident raises significant concerns and underscores the necessity for heightened vigilance regarding cross-border crime.
