Minister Jiwoh Abdulai represented His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio at the #UNGA80 celebrations, marking a significant milestone with the ratification of the Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement) by over 60 countries.
Sierra Leone proudly became the decisive 60th nation to endorse this landmark treaty, enabling its formal entry into force. This critical step underscores the President’s strong commitment to climate action, multilateral cooperation, and the protection of shared global resources.
For Sierra Leone, ratifying the BBNJ Agreement is vital for safeguarding ocean ecosystems that are essential for the livelihoods of coastal communities and ensuring West Africa’s role in promoting a more equitable and sustainable future. By joining this global initiative, Sierra Leone strengthens the President’s climate agenda and commits to responsible governance of ocean resources for the benefit of all humanity.
The BBNJ Agreement is set to enter into force on January 17, 2026.
