Freetown, August 19, 2025 — The Ministry of Information and Civic Education hosted its weekly press conference today, placing significant emphasis on electoral system consultations and the advancement of female representation in governance. Senior officials, including Deputy Minister Bocakarie Abdel-Aziz Bawoh and Hon. Mariama Zombo, addressed key issues that will shape the future of Sierra Leone’s political landscape.
Ngola Katta, Coordinator of the Tripartite Steering Committee Secretariat, provided an update on ongoing discussions related to Recommendation 78 of the Agreement for National Unity. These consultations aim to determine the most suitable electoral system—First Past the Post (FPTP) or District Block Proportional Representation (PR)—for the upcoming 2028 elections. Katta stressed the importance of ensuring that the chosen system aligns with the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Act, promoting inclusion for vulnerable groups.
Hon. Mariama Zombo, MP for Pujehun District and Public Relations Officer of the Parliamentary Female Caucus, made a compelling case for the Proportional Representation system. She highlighted the achievement of 30.4% female representation in Parliament under PR, warning that this progress could be at risk if the FPTP system is adopted. Zombo called for stronger regulatory measures to protect and enhance women’s representation in governance.
The focus on electoral reforms and gender representation reflects the government’s commitment to fostering an inclusive political environment, engaging the public in shaping the future of Sierra Leone.
