Chief Electoral Commissioner Zainab Iyamide Joaque has issued a stern warning to aspirants within the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) regarding premature campaigning ahead of the official timeline. In a notice to SLAJ members dated March 10, 2025, she emphasized the importance of adhering to the rules governing the declaration of intent and campaigning.
The notice underlines that the SLAJ Electoral Commission (SLAJEC) is closely monitoring the association’s official social media platforms at both national and regional levels.
“We would like to emphasize the distinction between the declaration of intent to contest and campaigning,” Joaque stated. The declaration of intent is a formal expression by a member indicating their desire to run for a position within the association. This right should be communicated clearly without any accompanying campaign messages, as per SLAJEC guidelines.
In contrast, campaigning involves actively promoting oneself or others for election, which includes soliciting votes or engaging in promotional activities. “It is crucial that this phase does not begin until officially announced by the SLAJEC,” Joaque added.
The SLAJEC also reminded members that the nomination process is still ongoing, and no individual has been certified as a candidate until all necessary procedures are completed. A formal declaration of any qualified member as a candidate will occur once these processes are fulfilled.
Additionally, SLAJ members are advised against referring to individuals who have declared their intent for a position as “in waiting,” as the election is yet to be conducted, and no winner has been declared. The Commission urges respect for any member’s decision to declare their intent and cautions against personal attacks on those expressing their aspirations. Any reported violations will be thoroughly investigated, and appropriate actions will be taken.
In conclusion, the SLAJEC advises all members to refrain from campaigning and to consult the Electoral Timeline for detailed guidelines regarding the electoral processes. “To maintain the integrity of our electoral process, we urge all members to avoid any form of campaigning in the official SLAJ national and regional WhatsApp groups, as well as on other social media platforms, until the Commission officially opens the campaign period.”
