The Sierra Leone Labour Congress (SLLC) has officially announced its plans to celebrate International Workers’ Day, commonly known as May Day. This year’s festivities will revolve around the theme “Shaping the World of Work: Innovation, Digital Transformation and Just Transition” and will feature the country’s first-ever Social Dialogue Forum and National Labour Conference, as well as a significant workers’ march through the streets of Freetown.

In partnership with the Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security and the Sierra Leone Employers’ Federation, the SLLC will host a two-day Labour Conference from Tuesday, April 29, to Wednesday, April 30, at the Miatta Conference Centre. The forum aims to facilitate constructive dialogue among workers, employers, and policymakers on critical issues affecting the workforce, with a strong focus on innovation, digital transformation, and inclusive labour transitions.

The highlight of the May Day celebrations will occur on Thursday, May 1, 2025, featuring a grand March Past that will unite workers and employers from both formal and informal sectors. Participants from the East End of Freetown are expected to assemble at PZ at 8:00 a.m., while those from the West End will gather at the Aberdeen Road/Wilkinson Road junction. Both groups will then proceed to the Miatta Conference Centre for the main commemorative event.

In a public call to action, the SLLC is encouraging participation from all categories of workers—including traders, teachers, factory and office employees, bike riders, drivers, musicians, technicians, and fish sellers. The Congress emphasizes that this united display of solidarity is essential for advocating better working conditions and fostering inclusive economic growth.
