On March 3, 2026, the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) convened a consultative meeting with executives of the Bike Riders Union at its headquarters on Kissy Road, Freetown. This meeting was a precursor to the anticipated signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at fostering compliance and enhancing road safety.
The event featured senior representatives from the National Executive of the Sierra Leone Commercial Bike Riders Union and top management from SLRSA. Discussions focused on crucial issues impacting bike riders, including adherence to traffic regulations, the efficiency of registration processes, safety standards, and the promotion of peaceful cooperation with law enforcement.
During the meeting, SLRSA Executive Director Mr. James Bagie Bio commended the leadership of the Bike Riders Union for their dedication. He emphasized that the upcoming MOU represents more than just a formal agreement; it signifies a commitment to mutual respect, accountability, and collaboration.
Mr. Bio addressed the decentralization of the Driver’s License process, stating that this initiative aims to make SLRSA services more accessible to all users. He encouraged the Bike Riders Union to utilize the Mobile Station to streamline the licensing process.
In response, Mr. Ishmeal Sandy, President of the Bike Riders Union, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative and assured the leadership of the Union’s support for government efforts. He described the decentralization of services as a long-awaited solution for the bike-riding community.
Mr. Sandy also raised concerns regarding the ongoing challenges faced by bike riders, calling for continued education and engagement to address these issues and support rider welfare.
This meeting is part of broader consultations leading up to the official signing of the MOU, the date of which will be announced soon.
