Sierra Leone’s Statistician-General, Andrew Bob Johnny, has departed for New York to participate in the 56th Session of the United Nations Statistical Commission, taking place from March 4 to 7, 2025.

Established in 1946, the United Nations Statistical Commission serves as the highest authority within the global statistical system, uniting Chief Statisticians from member states worldwide. The commission is responsible for setting statistical standards and developing concepts and methodologies, ensuring their implementation at both national and international levels.

This annual gathering brings together global statistical leaders to address urgent issues in data governance, national accounts, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Indicator framework, population and housing censuses, and food security and nutrition, among other topics. During the session, Statistician-General Johnny is expected to engage in high-level discussions aimed at enhancing global statistical standards that will influence national development policies.

As Sierra Leone prepares for its upcoming decennial population and housing census, Johnny is joined in New York by Abdulai Brima, Director of Censuses and GIS, and Theophilus Blaudfaust, Director of Data Science. It is anticipated that critical meetings with international partners and other census bodies will position Sierra Leone favorably as it embarks on the 2030 global round of censuses.
