The Sierra Leone Teaching Service Commission (TSC) has announced the reinstatement of 1,802 suspended teachers who were previously unverified. This decision comes after a comprehensive nationwide registration and verification exercise conducted in March 2025, with extensions provided in May and June. The initiative aimed to gather crucial real-time data on teachers actively working in classrooms and those receiving salaries.
In July, the TSC suspended 4,662 teachers who were either not found during the verification process or failed to respond during the extension periods. However, numerous teachers reached out to the Commission, asserting their registration status despite being on the suspension list. In collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, the TSC has been working diligently to reinstate verified teachers in this category, ensuring they receive their salary backlogs.
As of August 15, a verified list of 1,802 teachers was submitted to the Ministry of Finance for immediate inclusion in the August payroll. These teachers have now received their salaries for August, along with back pay for July.
The Commission is currently compiling additional lists for a second phase of reinstatements. The deadline for submissions is set between September 8 and September 12, 2025. The TSC emphasized that if a teacher is not found on the registration list, their head of school must attest to their active teaching status before they can be included in the next submission.
In light of recent concerns regarding potential strikes due to salary arrears, this news offers reassurance to parents as the new academic year commences. A strike would have posed significant challenges for public schools in adhering to their schedules.
