The 2025 Census: A Crucial Building Block in Nation Building

By: Elizabeth A. Kaine

As Sierra Leone prepares for the 2025 national census, it’s essential to debunk a common misconception: that the census is only conducted during election periods to manipulate outcomes. Nothing could be further from the truth. The census is a vital exercise for collecting accurate data to inform development policies, allocate resources, and improve public services.

In reality, the census is a crucial step towards progress, building on our country’s long history of population censuses dating back to 1802. With modern censuses conducted in 1963, 1974, 1985, 2004, and 2015, the 2025 census is a continuation of this legacy, employing Computer-Assisted Personal Interviews (CAPI) to enhance data collection and accuracy.

The census is more than just a headcount; it’s a comprehensive data collection process that provides valuable insights into our population’s dynamics, needs, and trends. As Sierra Leone strives to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and implement national development plans, accurate and reliable data is crucial. The census will provide the necessary information to inform policy decisions, allocate resources effectively, and measure progress towards our goals.

However, conducting a census should not only be about counting heads; it should also be about promoting sustainable development for all. We urge the government to use the census as an opportunity to address pressing issues such as reducing inflation rates, improving access to education and healthcare, and promoting economic growth.

While we acknowledge that the government cannot cater to everyone’s needs, we believe that it can work towards creating a more equitable society by using data-driven policies to address the needs of the most vulnerable populations.

It’s essential to recognize that participating in the census is not a favor to the government or any individual, but rather a civic duty and a vital contribution to our country’s development. By providing accurate and reliable data, citizens are helping to build a better future for themselves, their children, and their communities.

In conclusion, the 2025 census is a critical step towards Sierra Leone’s progress. We urge the government to seize this opportunity to promote sustainable development, reduce inflation rates, and improve the lives of all citizens. Together, we can build a brighter future for our nation, harnessing the power of data to inform policies and drive progress.
