Freetown – The courtroom at Pademba Road Court No. 2 was filled with palpable tension as 28-year-old Adekalie Conteh stood silently in the dock, facing serious allegations that have sent shockwaves through his community. A rising businessman, Conteh is now at the center of a harrowing murder case that has left a family devastated and a neighbourhood in turmoil.

Charged with conspiracy to murder and destruction of property, Conteh’s case took a heart-wrenching turn when the victim’s sister, Memunatu Bendu, took the witness stand. The proceedings revealed a tragic family story intertwined with legal implications.

With her voice trembling, Bendu recounted the moments leading up to her brother Andrew Mansaray’s untimely death. Just days before his body was discovered, Andrew had confided in her about a distressing incident. Following a trip to Aberdeen Beach on February 9, 2025, he had appeared visibly shaken after learning from a relative that his personal belongings, including his mobile phone, had gone missing.

The situation escalated two days later when Bendu received a harrowing call from her husband, informing her that Andrew had allegedly been captured by Conteh due to an unresolved financial dispute. As hours went by without any updates, Bendu was consumed by dread.

The nightmare culminated in a devastating confirmation at the Adonkia police station, where she was taken to identify her brother’s lifeless body. The emotional pain was overwhelming, yet Bendu pressed on, providing a detailed statement to investigators in hopes that justice would ultimately prevail.

Leading the prosecution, Deputy Superintendent of Police Sorie Conteh emphasized the gravity of the case, alleging that Conteh orchestrated the attack on Mansaray in a premeditated act of violence, alongside others. He is also accused of vandalizing properties owned by an individual identified as Francis Lebbie.

In contrast, the defense, represented by lawyer M.W. Jalloh Esq., sought to challenge Bendu’s testimony; however, her account remained resolute. Each word she spoke was laden with grief and a fierce commitment to advocate for her brother.

No plea was taken at this stage, and Magistrate Santigie Bangura ordered the accused to be remanded at the Freetown Male Correctional Centre. The case has been adjourned until April 4, 2025, when the prosecution will present additional witnesses.
