Transforming Lives: MAPCO’s EU-Funded Project Boosts Rural Loans from 10,000 to 76,000 Leones

Bumpeh, Sierra Leone On January 28, 2026, the Movement for Assistance and Promotion of Rural Communities (MAPCO) celebrated the closure of its transformative project aimed at enhancing the capacity of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Sierra Leone. The event marked the successful conclusion of an initiative funded by the European Union that provided local community-based organizations (CBOs) with a Revolving Loan Fund and a community Seed Bank.

During the ceremony, Emmanuel Kondeh Marcathy, MAPCO’s Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, emphasized the program’s significant impact. The project commenced with loans starting at 10,000 Leones, which increased to 12,000 Leones in the second year. Marcathy highlighted that participating communities like Bumbeh Pejeh have benefitted immensely, seeing their loan amounts swell to over 76,000 Leones. “We urge the beneficiary communities to utilize these funds wisely,” he said.

Chief Abdulai Swaray, Chairman of the Village Development Committee in Bumbeh, expressed profound gratitude to MAPCO for transforming local dependency narratives. “Since MAPCO’s involvement, our situation has changed dramatically,” he stated.

Lamin Ensah Kaikai, Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) Officer representative for the local council, acknowledged MAPCO’s critical contributions to district development. He vowed to address the issue of unregistered organizations in the area, stressing the need for effective utilization of grants to further poverty alleviation and community self-sufficiency.

The event concluded with the official handover of the Revolving Loan Fund and the distribution of certificates to apprenticeship trainees, symbolizing the collaborative efforts between MAPCO, local leadership, and community members toward sustainable development in Sierra Leone.
