The never-ending saga in the US presidential elections continue, on Sunday, September 15th, there was another twist. US news media reported that a Secret Service agent spotted an AK-47-style weapon poking out of bushes on the golf course about a hole ahead of where former president and the republican candidate for president, Donald Trump was playing, and engaged the suspect.
The reports also stated that a witness then saw a man flee in a black Nissan, which was later pulled over by a sheriff, and the potential suspect was arrested. A weapon, scope, backpacks, and GoPro camera were found in shrubs near the edge of the golf course.
After decades without political violence directed at a major-party presidential candidate, the US has now experienced two major incidents in the space of two months – with former president Donald Trump the target on both occasions.
According to Anthony Zurcher of the BBC, “The national discourse has coarsened, partisan divisions have sharpened and become more entrenched, and the standards for candidate behavior have eroded.”
