Freetown — The U.S. Embassy in Freetown has issued clarifications regarding the disbursement of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) funding in response to inquiries from the public on social media.
The Embassy emphasized that the $480 million MCC Compact does not funnel funds through the Government of Sierra Leone. Instead, it is managed by an independent board, which operates under the oversight of the MCC. The Embassy assured that all expenditures are closely monitored, with the majority of funds channeled directly from the U.S. Treasury to contractors engaged in the project.
Recently, the United States Government approved this significant investment aimed at transforming Sierra Leone’s energy sector and strengthening economic ties between the two nations. This formal endorsement follows an extensive review of U.S. foreign assistance programs and reaffirms Sierra Leone’s status as a trustworthy partner in promoting mutual economic and trade interests.
Signed in September 2024, the Compact is one of the largest single investments by the U.S. in Sierra Leone’s infrastructure. It focuses on modernizing energy infrastructure, expanding the national power grid, enhancing electricity distribution, and fortifying institutions responsible for energy management. As part of its commitment, the Government of Sierra Leone will contribute an additional $14.2 million toward the program’s implementation.
