The Government of the United Arab Emirates has donated 20,000 doses of Mpox vaccine to Sierra Leone to bolster the country’s efforts in responding to the ongoing disease outbreak.
Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the UAE, Rashid Sesay, expressed gratitude for the timely donation, stating, “On behalf of His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio and the people of Sierra Leone, I extend my deepest gratitude to our UAE friends for this kind and timely assistance.” He emphasized that this gesture reinforces the strong bilateral relationship between the two nations.
The UAE has a history of providing support to Sierra Leone, including the donation of sixteen metric tonnes of urgent medical supplies following the Wellington fire incident in 2021. Ambassador Sesay noted that this assistance was crucial for the recovery of fire victims. Additionally, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the UAE donated seven metric tonnes of medical supplies to aid Sierra Leone’s response.
To mitigate the spread of Mpox, Sierra Leone’s health authorities recently issued guidelines promoting frequent handwashing and reducing overcrowding, particularly in public spaces. Current health reports indicate that the country has recorded a total of 3,185 confirmed cases, with 15 deaths attributed to the disease.
The vaccines are expected to arrive at Freetown International Airport on Sunday, June 1, 2025.
