The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Sierra Leone has officially handed over a brand-new vehicle to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change to bolster monitoring efforts for the Western Area Peninsula (WAP) Project. This initiative, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), aims to strengthen conservation efforts and promote sustainable environmental practices.
The WAP Project is dedicated to protecting the Western Area Peninsula Forest Reserve from threats such as deforestation, habitat destruction, and climate change through biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, and community engagement.
During the vehicle presentation, Sayed Sahibzada, the Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP in Sierra Leone, underscored the importance of the vehicle, noting its timely contribution to the Ministry’s efforts in managing the WAP Project. “This vehicle will enhance the Ministry’s ability to monitor and manage the WAP Forest Reserve for long-term sustainability,” he stated.
In response, Madam Elizabeth Hawa Ellie, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, expressed heartfelt gratitude to UNDP and GEF, highlighting the significance of the donation. “With this vehicle, our teams will be better equipped to protect the Western Area Peninsula,” she remarked.
This donation reaffirms UNDP’s commitment to environmental sustainability and its partnership with the Government of Sierra Leone.
