The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has reaffirmed its longstanding partnership with Sierra Leone during a high-level meeting held in Iran between its Country Representative and the Sierra Leonean Ambassador.
During a courtesy visit to His Excellency Salamu Koroma, Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Iran, UNFPA Representative Mr. Ohashi Keita praised the Ambassador for his proactive diplomatic efforts and discussed potential avenues for enhanced collaboration.
Mr. Keita highlighted the organization’s nearly 50-year partnership with Sierra Leone, emphasizing ongoing technical support in areas such as sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, population management, and youth empowerment. He reiterated UNFPA’s commitment to strengthening these collaborative efforts.
In response, Ambassador Koroma expressed gratitude for the visit and reiterated his willingness to work closely with UNFPA on shared priorities. He acknowledged the organization’s critical role in advancing reproductive health and addressing demographic challenges, which he identified as central to Sierra Leone’s national development agenda.
The Ambassador also recognized Mr. Keita’s Japanese nationality, extending appreciation to the Government of Japan for its continued support to Sierra Leone through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Mr. Keita expressed satisfaction at the strong bilateral relations between Japan and Sierra Leone, reaffirming the commitment of both Japan and UNFPA to enhancing cooperation with African nations.
The meeting concluded with both parties expressing optimism for a strengthened partnership in the future.
