Urgent Call for Resolution: Labour Congress Backs Teachers' Strike Amid Ongoing School Closures

By Kadijatu Bangura, Reporter D.S.

The Sierra Leone Labour Congress (SLLC) has expressed strong solidarity with the Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU) as they prepare for a nationwide strike set to begin on September 8, 2025. This action responds to unresolved grievances with the government that have persisted since November 2024.

In a press release dated August 8, 2025, the SLLC criticized the government for failing to meet the teachers’ demands, despite assurances associated with the flagship Free Quality Education program. The organization emphasized the urgent need to address these issues to facilitate the reopening of schools and improve the welfare of teachers and the overall quality of education in the country.

As the strike looms, many schools are already closed, awaiting confirmation of subsidy payments from the government. The SLTU has stated that the strike will continue until it receives assurance that these payments have been reflected in school accounts. Parents are increasingly concerned about the impact of the strike on their children’s learning, particularly as schools face pressure to catch up on lessons missed last year.

Social media reports show locked school gates with students left waiting outside, highlighting the ongoing disruption. School leaders have reiterated their commitment to the strike until there is clear confirmation of the financial support.

The SLLC has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the SLTU and is exploring further collaboration with both the government and the teachers’ union to ensure educators’ concerns are addressed and educational disruptions minimized.
