Urgent Safety Alert: Brookfield's Old Railway Line Bridge Restricted to Light Vehicles Only

By Joseph Momoh, Daily Scope Reporter

The Sierra Leone Road Transport Authority (SLRTA) has announced new restrictions on the Old Railway Line Bridge in Brookfield due to its deteriorating condition. Effective immediately, only light vehicles, including cars and vans weighing no more than 4 tons, will be permitted to cross the bridge.

This decision follows mounting concerns from residents in the St. John community, who have expressed alarm over the bridge’s structural integrity after images of its dilapidated state circulated on social media. The SLRTA has pledged to implement measures to retrofit the bridge and restore safe vehicular traffic, including the installation of physical barriers to enforce the new load restrictions.

Local residents have reported visible cracks and significant structural damage, raising red flags about the safety of pedestrians, traders, students, and drivers who depend on the bridge daily. Many have described the bridge as unsafe and unstable, warning that continued use without necessary repairs could result in accidents or even a catastrophic collapse.
