Deputy Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Ing. Francis Alpha Kallon, met with Prof. Kwabena Nyarko, Lead Consultant for the World Bank-funded WASH Development Program for Sierra Leone, at the World Water Week in Stockholm, Sweden. The conference brought together global leaders in the water and climate resilience sectors.
During their meeting, Kallon and Nyarko discussed key issues affecting the Urban and Rural Water and Sanitation Strategy, the WASH Policy, and the Ministry’s strategic plan.
Deputy Minister Kallon emphasized the importance of preparing the WASH Development Plan (2025-2030) to guide the sector towards providing universal and sustainable access to safe water and sanitation services in Sierra Leone. He stressed the need for the document to align with the Medium Term National Development Plan and incorporate elements of climate-resilient WASH infrastructure.
Kallon also underscored the importance of completing the assignment within the set timeframe and assured Prof. Nyarko of the Ministry’s continued support to the World Bank Country Office.
Prof. Nyarko assured the Deputy Minister that the final WASH Development Program Document would be completed and submitted to the Ministry by December 2024. This document will serve as the basis for engaging with development partners to solicit funding for the WASH sector’s multi-year program implementation.
Prior to the appointment of Deputy Minister Kallon and Minister Sao-Kpato Hannah Isatta Max-Kyne, the World Bank had temporarily halted support to the WASH sector.
