WFP Launches School Feeding Program for 1,196 Pupils Across Five Districts

The World Food Programme (WFP) has successfully implemented a timely school feeding initiative benefiting 1,196 government-assisted primary schools across the districts of Bonthe, Kambia, Kenema, Karene, and Pujehun. This marks the second term of food distributions, with a particular emphasis on reaching children in hard-to-access areas, even during school holidays. By alleviating food insecurity, WFP aims to ensure that children can focus on their education without the distraction of hunger.

The school feeding program is part of a broader strategy to enhance food security and educational outcomes in Sierra Leone, a country that has faced significant challenges in both areas. The initiative underscores WFP’s commitment to supporting vulnerable populations, particularly in rural communities where access to nutritious food can be limited.

In addition to its school feeding efforts, WFP is making strides in promoting agricultural sustainability in the Tonkolili district. The organization is encouraging local farmers to adopt organic fertilizer production and eco-friendly soil management practices. These initiatives aim to improve farming techniques while fostering environmental stewardship, ensuring that agricultural practices contribute positively to the ecosystem.

WFP has also installed milling machines and provided small-scale farming tools in districts such as Kenema, Kambia, Moyamba, Pujehun, Tonkolili, and Koinadugu. These resources are designed to enhance the quality of rice production and increase its market value, supporting local farmers and strengthening food systems in the region.

This multifaceted approach not only addresses immediate food needs but also lays the groundwork for sustainable agricultural practices and improved food security in Sierra Leone.
