Sierra Leonean innovator Abu Gibrilla Conteh is poised to unveil an AI-powered robot as part of the Chief Minister David Sengeh’s Radical Inclusion AI Network of Robots (RAINBOTS).
In a Facebook post, Sengeh praised Conteh for challenging conventional stereotypes surrounding ability and inclusion with his latest creation: a double amputee robot that uses a wheelchair, designed to reflect the diverse spectrum of human experience and capability.
Conteh, who is a painter, sculptor, engineer, and robotics enthusiast, has built this groundbreaking project under the RAINBOTS initiative, which promotes radical inclusion in technology. His journey is as inspiring as his invention; once a school dropout, Conteh approached the then Minister of Education, who recognized his potential and facilitated his enrollment at Milton Margai University of Science and Technology, where he has excelled as both a student and an innovator.
The robot’s upcoming debut has already garnered international attention, with Hugh Herr, a renowned biomechatronics engineer at MIT, calling Conteh “super talented” after reviewing his work. This endorsement suggests a promising future for the young innovator, potentially opening doors to prestigious tech institutions worldwide.
“This is what radical inclusion looks like,” Sengeh stated. “It’s about giving every individual, regardless of background, a real chance to reach their fullest potential.”
Sengeh highlighted Conteh’s story as a powerful testament to President Julius Maada Bio’s commitment to investing in human capital, which he considers vital for the country’s future. As Sierra Leone continues to nurture talent and innovation, Conteh’s RAINBOT symbolizes hope, inclusion, and the limitless possibilities available to empowered youth.
