EPA and Security Forces Wreak Havoc on Illegal Dredging Operations in Kenema

By Joseph Momoh, Daily Scope Reporter

In a decisive move against illegal dredging, authorities in Kenema District destroyed 15 unauthorized dredging machines as part of a robust enforcement operation led by the Environmental Protection Agency of Sierra Leone (EPA-SL), in collaboration with the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) and the Sierra Leone Police (SLP). This initiative is part of a nationwide crackdown aimed at safeguarding the ecological integrity of vital waterways throughout the country.

The targeted dredgers were found to be operating without permits and contributing significantly to environmental deterioration within affected communities. Illegal dredging has emerged as a pressing issue, particularly in regions where rivers are lifelines for fishing, farming, and domestic water supply. Environmental experts warn that such activities not only devastate riverbeds but also disrupt aquatic ecosystems, escalate water pollution, and intensify riverbank erosion.

For many residents, these rivers are essential for food security, income generation, and daily survival. Concerns are mounting that if unchecked, ongoing dredging operations could have lasting repercussions for biodiversity and community livelihoods.

Officials involved in the enforcement operation emphasized that the destruction of the equipment serves as a necessary measure to deliver a clear message to violators. However, they acknowledged that illegal dredging often continues due, in part, to alleged insider support from local actors, complicating enforcement efforts. As such, they reiterated the importance of firm action to prevent future violations and protect vulnerable ecosystems.

Recognizing that community cooperation is vital in combating illegal dredging, authorities are coupling enforcement actions with public awareness campaigns and initiatives aimed at fostering local ownership of environmental stewardship. They also stressed the importance of strengthening the legal framework around environmental crimes to ensure offenders face substantial consequences.

Commendations have been extended to the EPA’s Kenema Regional Office and its security partners for their effective coordination and dedicated efforts to preserve Sierra Leone’s waterways. Observers indicate that ongoing collaboration between state institutions and local communities will be crucial for achieving long-term success in the fight against illegal dredging.
