The Sierra Leone Police on Tuesday held an interfaith memorial service at the Senior Officers’ Mess, Police Headquarters, Kingtom, to honour six officers who were killed during the 10 August 2022 protest.
Inspector General of Police William Fayia Sellu led tributes to the fallen officers, describing them as heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation. He urged serving officers to uphold professionalism, integrity, discipline, courage and dedication as a way of preserving the legacy of their colleagues.
“We must honour their memory through our conduct and commitment to duty,” Sellu said. “Their sacrifice should continue to inspire us to protect the peace and security of this country.”
The IGP also extended condolences to the families of the deceased, recognizing the loss of parents, spouses, children and friends. He called for continued support for the bereaved families and stressed that the sacrifices of the fallen officers must not be forgotten.
Assistant Inspector General of Police Sylvester Koroma paid tribute to both the six officers who died and those who sustained injuries during the disturbances. He noted that police personnel continue to face risks in the line of duty, including armed attacks and accidents, and emphasized the need to strengthen officer protection and build community resilience.
Assistant Inspector General of Police Brima Kanneh also expressed sympathy to the bereaved families. He urged officers to remain vigilant and committed to the values of professionalism, unity and integrity.
The interfaith service included Christian and Muslim prayers, scripture readings and reflections for the fallen officers, their families, and for the continued peace and security of Sierra Leone.
The ceremony concluded with prayers for the eternal rest of the deceased and comfort for their families, as the Sierra Leone Police reaffirmed its commitment to preserving their memory and honouring their service to the nation.
