The Welfare Society for the Disabled Sierra Leone (WESOFOD-SL) Pujehun Branch convened a crucial meeting on February 27, 2026, to engage 30 persons with disabilities selected for an upcoming six-month technical and vocational skills training program at the Village of Hope in Pujehun District. This initiative, supported by Trócaire through the TECH-VOC project, aims to foster economic independence and inclusion for individuals with disabilities.
During the gathering, WESOFOD-SL’s Pujehun District Coordinator, Mohamed Sillah, extended his gratitude to all attendees and emphasized the organization’s commitment to inclusive development. “We received over 50 applications, but only 30 candidates have been shortlisted,” Sillah noted. The training will cover essential skills in tailoring, soap-making, and bead-making, all designed to empower participants and enhance their employability.
Sillah elaborated on the project’s components, which include the construction of an accessible vocational training center, now nearing completion. The facility will be equipped with modern tools to facilitate effective training, and participants will also receive education in business and financial management to bolster their entrepreneurial skills. Additionally, the program will offer short-term skills training to 20 young individuals with disabilities and 10 parents of children with disabilities.
Hassan Kpaka, one of the selected participants, expressed appreciation for the opportunity, affirming that he and his peers are committed to making the most of their training.
WESOFOD-SL’s Financial Officer, Lahai Fullah, assured attendees of the project’s financial transparency, guaranteeing that all promised materials and benefits will be provided and properly documented. Skills Centre Coordinator Mohamed Alhaji Sheriff stressed the importance of attendance, warning that any trainee absent three times without a valid excuse will be dismissed from the program. Moreover, he confirmed that participants would receive transport support and that successful graduates will be provided with start-up kits for their own businesses. Post-training monitoring will also be conducted to ensure ongoing support and success.
The TECH-VOC project is poised to make a significant impact on economic empowerment and inclusion for persons with disabilities in Pujehun District, reinforcing WESOFOD-SL’s role as a leading advocate for disability rights and sustainable development in Sierra Leone.
