The Sierra Leone Police have destroyed two full containers of seized narcotics and pharmaceutical drugs in Freetown, as authorities step up efforts to cut off drug trafficking networks.
The exercise took place on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU) headquarters in Hastings. Police said the destruction is part of a wider campaign to stop illegal drugs from entering communities across the country.
Speaking at the event, Head of TOCU, CSP Rev. Michael Lagga, said the move was a clear sign of government commitment and transparency in the fight against organized crime. According to him, the drugs were recovered through intelligence-driven operations carried out jointly by TOCU and other security partners.
He warned that drug trafficking continues to pose a serious danger to national security. “It fuels crime, corruption and violence, and destroys the lives of our young people. This exercise shows that we will not relent in dismantling these networks and protecting our communities,” Lagga said.
Also speaking, Director of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Andrew J. Kaikai, said the government remains determined to keep dangerous substances off the streets. He noted that the destroyed consignment included 376 cartons of Tramadol and 20 cartons of Poska medicines, all intercepted in coordinated operations.
Kaikai praised the collaboration between police, NDLEA, the Office of National Security, and international partners. He called for stronger efforts to identify and break up the criminal groups behind drug trafficking.
The destruction was witnessed by officials from the SLP, NDLEA, ONS, the Judiciary, diplomatic missions, religious leaders, community representatives and members of the media.
