Parliament Puts Probe into Election Watchdog on Hold

Freetown – Speaker Segepoh Solomon Thomas has put on hold a parliamentary investigation into the National Elections Watch (NEW), a consortium of civil society organisations, following a Private Member’s Motion moved by Hon. Mustapha M. Sellu.

The motion, which aimed to examine NEW’s financial flows and accountability mechanisms, was supported by majority MPs but faced opposition from some lawmakers who argued it would focus on election-related matters. Hon. Mohamed Bangura of the Opposition called for the motion to be shelved, saying issues related to elections were obsolete.

Speaker Thomas ruled that the establishment of the investigation committee be put on hold, citing the sensitivity of the matter and public perception. He assured MPs that their parliamentary rights would be respected.

The motion was prompted by a letter from the National Consortium On Public Accountability, urging Parliament to investigate NEW’s operations amid concerns over transparency and accountability in handling donor funds.
