NPAA Boss Rejects “Collective Blame,” Vows to Defend Wetlands

By Kadijatu Bangura (Reporter, D.S)

The Executive Director of the National Protected Area Authority (NPAA), Shiekh Ahmed Tunis, has responded to allegations published by Global Times, stating that he would rather act independently in support of environmental protection than be associated with any approach he believes contributes to ecological harm.

In a written clarification, Mr. Tunis said he has built his professional standing on integrity and service, adding that he expected what he described as a fair and objective engagement from the reporter.

He also emphasized that the wetlands at the center of the matter are designated protected areas. According to Mr. Tunis, any person or private citizen who believes they have a claim to such land may seek legal redress through the courts.

However, he warned that encroachment into protected ecosystems weakens the natural safeguards that societies rely on, and urged relevant stakeholders to respect the legal status of the areas.

Mr. Tunis further stated that if his stance on safeguarding critical environments is viewed as “overzealous,” he said he would accept that position insisting that protecting the wetlands remains non-negotiable.
