The Ministry of Social Welfare and Sierra Leone Police signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enforce the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2024.
Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu, emphasized the need for collective action, especially in rural areas. “We cannot do it alone,” he said.
Sellu highlighted challenges, including parents settling child marriage cases for minimal compensation, and advocated for a fast-track court.
The MoU outlines collaboration on child abuse, domestic violence, and human trafficking cases. The law prohibits under-18 marriages.
Next steps include a one-stop center for child marriage cases, personnel training, and a witness protection scheme, marking a significant milestone in Sierra Leone’s journey towards gender equality and child protection.
