Sierra Leone Bolsters Climate Resilience at African Risk Capacity Conference

Sierra Leone is strengthening its disaster preparedness and response capabilities through participation in the 16th Conference of the Parties (CoP16) of the African Risk Capacity (ARC) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The country’s delegation, led by Senior Deputy Financial Secretary Mariatu Brown, is engaging in high-level discussions on climate resilience, risk management, and insurance mechanisms.

Soko M. Kai-Samba, Director of Partnership at the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), emphasized the importance of innovative financial solutions, including risk pooling and insurance, to mitigate the impact of extreme weather events. “This platform provides a unique opportunity for African countries to collectively design sustainable solutions to shared risks,” he said.

The conference, organized by the Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Commission, brings together policymakers, experts, and development partners to enhance climate resilience and disaster risk management across Africa. Sierra Leone’s participation highlights its commitment to leveraging regional initiatives to improve national capacity and protect vulnerable communities.

The African Risk Capacity provides risk pooling and transfer services, enabling Member States to access timely financial support during crises. The initiative prioritizes inclusivity and gender equality, ensuring comprehensive disaster risk management efforts.
