Makeni, April 17, 2026 The Statistics Sierra Leone Council has opened its third strategic retreat in Makeni to sharpen institutional readiness for the 2026 National Population and Housing Census, bringing together directors, new appointees, and returning members for two days of technical planning.
Council Chairman Moses Williams declared the retreat open at the Mena Hill Conference Hall on April 16. Statistician General and Chief Census Officer Andrew Bob Johnny praised the council’s support and reaffirmed his pledge to lead the institution in producing credible national data. He said the sessions are designed to align departments around a single operational timeline as census activities scale up.
Day one deliberations covered core areas tied to census preparedness and broader statistics management. Senior directors presented updates on census coordination, economic statistics, demographic and social data, data science, and the national statistical system. The agenda also included communications strategy, administration, internal audit and compliance, logistics, project coordination, human resource development, and procurement.
The retreat aims to tighten inter-departmental coordination, improve efficiency, and strengthen accountability ahead of nationwide enumeration. Council members are expected to adopt a set of action points at the close of the session on April 17 to guide the next phase of census rollout.
