FREETOWN, 21 April 2026 Sierra Leone’s Parliament on Tuesday ratified an amendment to the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) Constitution, in a move officials say will strengthen the country’s aviation sector and align it with continental best practices.
The ratification, approved during a sitting of the House of Parliament, adopts the revision to Article 10(4) of the AFCAC Constitution first passed by the 28th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly in Addis Ababa on 31 January 2017. The amendment is intended to enhance coordination and operational efficiency across Africa’s civil aviation framework.
Transport and Aviation Minister Alhaji Fanday Turay tabled the agreement before lawmakers, describing it as “a strategic step” toward modernising Sierra Leone’s transport infrastructure. He said the amendment will help establish mechanisms to improve regulatory efficiency and support growth in the aviation sector at both national and international levels.
Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, Mathew Sahr Nyuma, closed the debate by noting that the ratification positions Sierra Leone to meet international aviation standards. He underscored the importance of parliamentary quorum in adopting resolutions of national significance.
Following the vote, Minister Turay thanked Parliament for its support and indicated that further aviation-related agreements and legislative proposals would be brought before the House in due course.
