The Directorate of Primary Health Care has completed a field assessment of some of the most isolated health facilities in Bonthe District, uncovering makeshift clinics, fire-damaged centers, and staffing gaps in riverine communities.

DPHC Director Dr. Brima Osaio Kamara led the mission with the PHC Fellow, Chief Community Health Officer, District Medical Officer, District Council Engineer, and other members of the District Health Management Team. The team left Yargoi in Imperi Chiefdom at dawn, traveling by boat from 7:00 a.m., trekking five miles on foot, and crossing by canoe to reach Benduma in Kwameibaikrim Chiefdom.

In Benduma, officials found a school quarter serving as a temporary health post due to the lack of a dedicated building. In nearby Tei, the Community Health Post was dilapidated and run by just two health workers covering a large catchment area.

At Benducha Community Health Centre, recently hit by a fire, consultations and maternal deliveries are being conducted inside staff quarters after the main facility was destroyed.

DPHC has opened talks with local communities on behalf of the Ministry of Health to map out immediate and long-term interventions. A full report with photographic evidence will be submitted to ministry leadership.

The Directorate said the visit supports Health Minister Dr. Austin Demby’s drive, under President Julius Maada Bio, to strengthen Peripheral Health Units nationwide and ensure quality care at all stages of life.
