The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding children’s rights as Sierra Leone welcomed the new UNICEF Country Representative, Ms. Mariko Kagoshima.
Dr. Isata Mahoi, Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, made the pledge on Monday during a courtesy call by Ms. Kagoshima at the Ministry’s headquarters in Freetown.
Dr. Mahoi said protecting children remains central to government policy and stressed that partnerships with development partners like UNICEF are key to delivering tangible results. She commended UNICEF for its longstanding support in strengthening child protection systems, improving welfare services, and extending care to vulnerable children across the country.
“The Government remains fully committed to working with UNICEF to ensure every child in Sierra Leone is safe, protected and given the opportunity to thrive,” Dr. Mahoi stated.
She further noted that sustained collaboration is needed to tackle pressing challenges affecting children, including protection risks and limited access to essential services. She emphasized that government policy is anchored on the principle that no child should be left behind.
In her remarks, Ms. Kagoshima congratulated the Minister on her leadership and assured UNICEF’s continued support to the Ministry’s priorities. She said the agency remains focused on working with national authorities to achieve measurable outcomes for children nationwide.
Both officials agreed to deepen cooperation in the coming months, with a focus on reinforcing child protection frameworks, promoting children’s rights, and building a safer and more inclusive environment for all children in Sierra Leone.
The meeting ended with both parties expressing optimism that the renewed partnership will accelerate progress on child welfare and protection across the country.
