Freetown City Council is preparing to launch plastics recycling operations at the Kingtom dumpsite by the end of June, in partnership with environmental group Sierra Forever Green.
Ahead of the rollout, plastic bottle collection is already underway across the city. Last week, Sierra Forever Green began paying Kroo Bay youth Le70 for every jumbo bag of plastic delivered. Within three hours, 60 bags were removed from Samba Gutter, a major drainage channel in the area.
City officials said the initiative has produced immediate results in clearing plastic waste from waterways prone to blockages and flooding.
The Freetown City Council is now using an excavator to remove the remaining non-plastic debris from Samba Gutter. Authorities are also urging residents to register with FCC-approved waste service providers to improve waste management and prevent illegal dumping.
Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr said the program is part of the council’s broader push to tackle plastic pollution and improve urban sanitation under the #DortiMusGo campaign.
