The Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority has defended its security procedures following preliminary findings in the investigation into the vessel MV Acronian, which was intercepted by Spanish authorities.

SLPHA said the probe uncovered discrepancies in crew numbers, noting that about six additional crew members were aboard when the ship was intercepted compared to records at departure from Freetown.

Investigators also reported no official records of Serenity Shipping Company being registered as a business entity in Sierra Leone.

The authority confirmed that inquiries are ongoing in coordination with international partners, including Spanish law enforcement. It reiterated its commitment to countering transnational organized crime, illegal trafficking, and other maritime security threats.

SLPHA added that the Port of Freetown operates under international maritime security and operational standards aimed at supporting legitimate trade while safeguarding shipping interests.

The authority urged the public to rely only on verified information from official sources as the investigation progresses.
