Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Russia, His Excellency Mohamed Yongawo, has warned that global security can no longer depend on any single power, urging collective action as the world shifts into a multipolar era.
Ambassador Yongawo made the remarks while representing Sierra Leone at the First International Security Forum of high-ranking security officials in Moscow from 26 to 29 May 2026. The forum, held under the theme “Challenges and Threats to International Security in the Context of the Emergence of the Multipolar World,” drew senior officials from across the globe.
Addressing delegates, Yongawo said the emerging multipolar order is defined by dispersed influence and shifting alliances, with Africa now occupying a central position in global affairs rather than the periphery. He cautioned that the absence of a clear global leader is complicating coordinated responses to shared threats and increasing the risk of miscommunication and miscalculation among major powers.
The Ambassador identified competition for resources, technological supremacy, and strategic positioning as growing pressure points, particularly in Europe, the South China Sea, the Middle East, and Africa. He also flagged the exploitation of the fluid international environment by non-state actors, including terrorist groups, cybercriminals, and transnational criminal networks. Climate-induced instability and the proliferation of advanced weaponry, he added, require responses that no single state can deliver alone.
“No one country can make the world a safer place. It has to be a collective responsibility, and even the smallest nations are equally important to global peace and security,” Yongawo told the forum. He stressed that security must extend beyond conflict prevention to include justice, opportunity, and hope, arguing that a nation’s stability cannot be insulated from regional and global turmoil.
The Ambassador conveyed greetings from President Julius Maada Bio and expressed gratitude to President Vladimir Putin and the Russian people for their hospitality. He voiced hope that deliberations at the forum would yield tangible benefits for countries of the Global South and East. Yongawo also noted that as Chairman of ECOWAS, President Bio is working closely with regional leaders to promote peace, security, and development across West Africa.
He urged delegates to use the forum to deepen cooperation, share knowledge, and reaffirm commitments to a secure and prosperous future for coming generations.
Ambassador Yongawo was accompanied by Mr. Ibrahim Saspo Sankoh, Head of Chancery, and Ms. Rosetta M. Conteh, Esq., First Secretary at the Embassy of Sierra Leone in Moscow.
