Twenty-four nurses have graduated with specialist diplomas in Neurosurgery Care from Connaught Hospital, forming the country’s first dedicated neuro care nursing team.

The cohort completed a hybrid training program delivered by Mission Brain in partnership with the University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex and the Ministry of Health. Certificates were presented today during a Connaught Hospital management meeting.

The course combined online modules with in-person practical sessions as part of broader efforts to rebuild and expand neurosurgical services nationwide.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Allieu Kamara said the collaboration has also sponsored two Sierra Leonean doctors for advanced neurosurgery training. Since returning to Sierra Leone in 2024, he has been working to strengthen neurosurgical care at Connaught while his colleague continues studies abroad.

Dr. Kamara highlighted the establishment of a Neurological Unit at Connaught as a key milestone. “Equipping nurses with neurosurgical skills is critical to managing neurological cases and improving patient outcomes,” he said.

He expressed appreciation to USLTHC Board Chairperson Dr. Sonia Spencer, Chief Medical Director Prof. Kehinde Oluwadiya, hospital management, the Ministry of Health, Mission Brain, and other partners for supporting healthcare capacity building.

The Senior Matron congratulated the graduates for completing a rigorous program. She noted that many nurses applied, but the 24 distinguished themselves through dedication and resilience, calling them pioneers in specialized neurosurgery nursing at the institution.

She also commended Mission Brain for combining professional certification with tokens of appreciation for participants.

The graduation underscores growing collaboration between local institutions and international partners to improve specialized medical services and patient care across the country.
